Our goal is to be an internationally leading research environment in our chosen fields.
The department has, over time, consistently been among Norway's most productive research communities, measured in publication points per scientific staff. The department is home to several reasearch groups, such as Risk Management and Societal Safety (in Norwegian) and Sustainable urban development, planning and design.

Studies
The Department of Safety, Economics and Planning is responsible for a wide range of studies at all levels (see full list on our Norwegian page).
Master of Science in City and Regional Planning
The 2-year master programme in City and Regional Planning qualifies you to understand and shape the cities of the future. Taught in English.
Master of Science in Risk Analysis
A risk expert is able to support risk knowledge generation for all types of issues and can help treat current and emerging risk problems facing societies today, such as terrorism, complex technological risks and climate change. Taught in English.
Risk Management and Societal Safety – PhD
Risk Management and Societal Safety is a subfield within the doctoral programme in Science and Technology at UiS. The subfield has specialisations in risk management, societal safety, industrial economics, and city and regional planning. The doctoral programme is linked to the research within each of these specialisations.
Research at the department
The employees at the department have a high level of professional competence. Half of the scientific staff are professors. The department has many PhD students.
