About me
Pierre Liboureau is a PhD fellow in the ecotoxicology and environmental monitoring research group. He was awarded a MSc in Marine Biological Resources from Ghent University in 2021 and a BSc in Chemistry from King’s College, London in 2019.
Pierre’s research focuses on exploring the aquaculture potential of the red seaweed Palmaria palmata. Despite valuable nutritional and nutraceutical properties, this species’ biology is poorly understood, hindering the development of a sustainable cultivation industry. Pierre combines cultivation experiments with molecular biology techniques to elucidate mechanisms of growth, bioactivity and reproduction in this seaweed.
Pierre’s research is part of the NORA-funded Sølstain project, which aims to develop and promote sustainable cultivation and harvest of P. palmata in the North Atlantic. Working alongside partners in the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland, Pierre has had the opportunity to study different seaweed populations in diverse work environments.
