The course provides students with a deeper insight in central and current historical topics connected to the student’s individual work with their bachelor thesis. Students will choose themselves which historical topic they want to work in. Choice of topic will be made in consultation with the respective supervisor.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • develop historical knowledge with detail knowledge connected to a specific research question.
  • evaluate and critique historical arguments, explain how these have been created for different purposes, and how they may be improved. This includes arguments made by the students themselves.
  • recognise history as an interpreted presentation of lifeworlds in past which historians construct in their own present based on sources.

Skills

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • gather, sort, organise, examine, syntethise, quote and critically analyse complex material relevant for the bachelor thesis, including primary sources and literature.
  • evaluate a selection of historical sources relevant for the bachelor thesis with regards to reliability, position, perspective and relevance.
  • construct arguments based on scholarly foundations, using sources, theories, and methods in a precise and transparent manner, this too includes presentation of own findings.
  • demonstrate good academic writing skills, including how to structure a thesis, the presentation of the argument, language, and references

General competences

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • able to construct arguments based on scholarly foundations, using sources, theories, and methods in a precise and transparent manner.
  • deploy analytical and critical thinking and understanding in fields other than history.

Bachelorstudents must have 45 credits in entry-level history courses to start the specialization. Students that apply to the Specialization only, must have 50 credits in entry-level history courses.

Coursework requirements

Approved draft of project description, two supervisions

During the term, the student is to submit one draft of the project description of the bachelor thesis, as well as have two supervisions.

Both obligatory activities need to be approved in order to take the exam.

Students cannot request new supervision when resubmitting the bachelor thesis/new admission.
