The course consists of four topics:

  1. Introduction to the subject of social work
  2. Social problems
  3. Values and professional ethics
  4. Practice of social work

Social work focuses on both the individual and its context, and one seeks the most comprehensive understanding of the user’s situation. Knowledge about social problems and how they arise is fundamental in understanding social work. Values in the subject and personal values influence the practice of social work. There is a focus on resources in the individual, in the family and in the environment. Social work takes place at individual, group and societal levels. Emphasis is placed on students being able to apply knowledge, values and skills in social work.

Learning outcome

After successfully completing and passing the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Introduction to the subject of social work

  • Has knowledge about social work theory that focuses on individuals, families, groups and society.
  • Has knowledge about theoretical perspectives, experiential and user knowledge in social work.
  • Has knowledge about the subject area’s history, traditions, distinctive character and place in society.
  • Has knowledge about the subject’s philosophy of science positions, knowledge development and the profession’s social responsibility.
  • Has knowledge about the subject as it is practised in the professional field (field visits).

Social problems

  • Has knowledge about how social problems arise and develop in a societal context.
  • Has knowledge about financial advice that can be used to prevent and remedy debt and personal financial problems.

Values and professional ethics

  • Has insight into views of humanity and values in social work, professional ethics and relevant ethical theories.
  • Has knowledge about people’s different starting points and vulnerability, values and lifestyles.
  • Has insight into ethical issues and can manage ethical dilemmas in the professional role and in encounters with people.
  • Has insight into conditions that contribute to discrimination and how to promote non-discriminatory practices and an inclusive society.
  • Has insight into conditions that contribute to inequality and can promote social justice together with people in vulnerable positions.
  • Is aware of their own values and attitudes, and how these affect professional practice.
  • Is aware of and can critically reflect on professional and ethical issues relevant to social work practice.

Practice of social work

  • Has experience in applying academic knowledge in order to identify resources and provide hope in collaboration with people in vulnerable life situations.
  • Can evaluate scientific knowledge in a practical context.
  • Has experience in applying communication skills with a focus on establishing a good relationship.
  • Has experience in applying the strengths perspective, and is able to identify strengths and possibilities in individuals and in the environment.

Students who fail the re-sit or re-scheduled course examination must take the next ordinary examination together with the subsequent year group. The compulsory activities that have already been approved do not have to be retaken. Students must take the examination in accordance with any new and revised course description, but decide themselves whether to follow teaching in the new examination semester.

Coursework requirements

Both compulsory activities must be approved in order for the student to take the examination. Approval/non-approval of compulsory activities is announced on Studentweb, normally no later than 7 days before the examination. Students who lack approval of one or more compulsory activities will be withdrawn from the examination.

Written assignment: Individual written assignment. Scope: 1500 words (+/- 10%) including table of contents and notes; excluding source referencing and bibliography. Referencing style: APA 7th

75% attendance requirement: Attendance is compulsory with 75% in social work group teaching (skills training), and work involving field visits (including a report and presentation). Students who have less than 75% attendance in the compulsory teaching activities lose the right to take the examination, regardless of the reason.
