Inclusive Education (EIS110)

This module is a mandatory part of the course. The introduction part provides knowledge about the educational system in Norway, and experiences with the Norwegian approach to outdoor education. It establishes a foundation for the other modules, and offers an opportunity to expand students' reflective and professional competence in intercultural learning and cultural diversity in their future work. This module consists of lectures, group work, and 5 full days of school-based practice during which students have opportunity to observe Norwegian way of inclusive education.

Content

  • Educational systems and traditions in Norway
  • Theory and concept of diversity, inclusion, and belonging within the early childhood education practice.
  • Outdoor education: Learning outside the classroom, ideas and practice
  • Learning and participation in kindergarten or primary school (focused age is 1-10 years old children).
  • National anti-bullying initiatives in Norway

Learning outcome

After successful completion of the module, students are able to:

  • Describe the educational system and approach in Norway comparing to theirs own home countries
  • Reflect on educational approaches from a comparative perspective
  • Know about different ways of defining inclusive education
  • Discuss and adapted the theory and concept of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Describe official Norwegian policy on inclusive education, including anti-bullying initiatives

Final examination is an essay-based exam, which can be written individually (2500 - 3000 words) or in pairs (4000-4500 words). The essay is written according to guidelines provided during the course. The content is a reflection on inclusive education observed in the school/kindergarten placement.The assignment is assessed on a scale from A-F, where A-E denotes pass (A is the highest achievement) and F denotes fail.

Coursework requirements

All lectures, seminars are mandatory. School/Kindergarten placement is mandatory, Assignment
Introduction: a written assignment (1000 -1200 words), reflecting on experiences and professional development as student teachers in Norway. This assignment is assessed with "approved/not approved".

Method of work

The module is organised through lectures, group work and student presentations. Active participation in classroom activities and group work is required. The course includes one week school/kindergarten placement. In connection to this, the students will carry out a small research assignment.

Students will participate in International Week together with international students to engage in Outdoor education; details will be provided in a specific programme.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
