Accounting is generally regarded as the language of business. Therefore, the aim of this course is to provide you with the required knowledge and skills to master this language for understanding business. To realise this goal, the course incorporates advanced topics in accounting and auditing. In accounting, the objective is to develop your knowledge and skills in applying and analysing IFRS Accounting Standards and the theoretical framework in the preparation of complex financial statements such as those of groups. The aim of the auditing part is to provide you with the required knowledge and higher-level skills to perform the responsibilities of a registered auditor within the framework of relevant legislation and international standards.

Content

The course encompasses advanced topics in accounting and auditing. Thus, it assumes knowledge acquired in other accounting and auditing courses offered in the study program. The course then develops and applies this knowledge further and in greater depth. The main areas of the accounting syllabus cover the reporting of financial information for group companies in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and relevant IFRS Accounting Standards. Specific topics would include accounting for transactions in financial statements (i.e., selected IFRS) and preparation of financial statements (e.g., preparation of consolidated financial statements for group companies).

The Advanced Audit and Assurance syllabus is designed to reflect the challenges auditors will face in their professional life. In this aspect, you will learn how to analyse, evaluate, and conclude on the assurance engagement and other audit and assurance issues in the context of best practice and current developments. The syllabus will cover advanced auditing topics such as group audits, fraud & error, automated tools & techniques, and the audit of social, environmental, sustainability & integrated reporting.

The teaching will be in Norwegian and English.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon completion of this course, students will have knowledge of:

  • How to account for transactions in accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards
  • The preparation and presentation of group financial statements in accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards
  • How auditors recognise the specific matters to be considered before accepting appointment as group auditor to a group in each situation
  • How to identify and develop an appropriate response to circumstances which indicate a high risk of error, irregularity, fraud, or misstatement in the financial statements
  • Emerging technologies and the use of automated tools and techniques and the potential impact on the conduct of an audit and audit quality

Skills

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyse accounting transactions in accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards.
  • Apply knowledge on the preparation and presentation of group financial statements in accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards.
  • Examine the specific factors auditors consider before accepting appointment as group auditor to a group in each situation.
  • Examine emerging technologies and automated auditing tools and techniques typically used in the conduct of an audit.

The course has mandatory work requirements in the form of two individual written submissions. Compulsory activities must be approved in order to sit for the exam.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
