The course includes important literature related to the candidate's topics and major issues. Theoretical approaches and methodological tools that are relevant for the candidate's project will be scrutinized.

The course will contain topics at the advanced level in societal safety. The course is intended to bring the student to the research front in an area pertaining to his/her PhD project. The topics related to each candidate may vary from risk management, societal safety, to emergency and crisis management. The candidate is responsible for the literature search and argue for his or her choices of curriculum. The curriculum shall be analyzed from the candidate's major issue, which will be published in a scientific article. This might be related to theory, methodology, research results, basic assumptions, models etc., in which it is the curriculum that is the empirical material.
Learning outcome
After completed course, the candidate shall have sufficiently detailed knowledge of the topic to be at the research front within the field. The candidate shall be able to discuss various research approaches to support his or her research activities.

The candidate shall submit an article which shall be evaluated and granted pass to provide access to oral exam.Oral exam includes presentation of article, which will be defended in a viva covering curriculum. In cases where the research field is related to a professional area representatives will be invited for seminars and presentations.
The course uses seminars as pedagogic platform, in which the candidates present selected parts of the curriculum to an audience which can vary from internal colleagues to external professional staff and academics involved in the specific areas. The candidates will develop a manuscript/paper with a major issue and analysis of the literature.
There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
