Doctor philosophiae (dr. philos.) is a non-supervised PhD that can be conferred to researchers who have qualified for a doctoral degree on their own.
This is a Dr. Philos. degree
The Dr. Philos. degree at the University of Stavanger is awarded based on:
- A scientific dissertation
- Two trial lectures, one on a self-chosen topic and one on a publicly assigned topic
- A public defence of the dissertation (disputation)
The dissertation must be an independent scientific work that meets international standards regarding ethical requirements, academic level, and methodology. While the dissertation should be at the same academic level as a PhD thesis, it should have a much larger scope.
Who can apply for a Dr. Philos. degree?
Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent and also meet the admission requirements for the relevant PhD programme. Additionally, you must be a citizen of Norway or another Nordic country.
If you are not a citizen of Norway or another Nordic country, you may still apply if:
- You have a residence permit in Norway.
- The dissertation addresses topics or is based on material directly related to Norway.
- The dissertation has a strong connection to Norwegian research within the field.
- The dissertation is based on research conducted during a stay at a Norwegian university or research institution, or involves significant contact with Norwegian researchers.
