The objective of the Energy Systems Engineering Group at the Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering is to contribute to the “global energy transition” and “clean and affordable energy for all” via conducting multidisciplinary research and education on various sustainable energy solutions, including, but not limited to geothermal energy systems, micro-gas turbines, the use of heat pumps for building heating and cooling, the use of hydrogen in industrial applications, performance monitoring and fault diagnosis.
The group has access to state-of-the-art research facilities, such as highly fuel flexible micro gas turbine test rig, shallow geothermal energy reservoir connected to an advanced supercritical CO2 heat pump laboratory, and local industrial plants and energy systems. These are used for development and validation of tools and methods, physical and artificial intelligence-based models, which are used in integrated design, control, and optimization algorithms.
The group focuses on developing innovative techno-economically viable energy systems and has a broad international network of academic and industrial partners.
