The IAI Research Group at the University of Stavanger (UiS) organized the ACM SIGIR International Conference on the Theory of Information Retrieval (ICTIR) in 2020. ICTIR serves as a premier platform for researchers to present and discuss cutting-edge research on the foundational aspects of Information Retrieval (IR) and explore its connections with related disciplines.
About ICTIR
ICTIR focuses on providing a forum for researchers to share their work on a wide range of topics related to IR. These topics include human search processes, search and recommendation systems, learning and optimization for IR, language and representations in IR, sensory information related to IR, and the ethical considerations of artificial intelligence in information retrieval. The conference explicitly welcomes papers on core IR and encourages submissions that explore the intersections between IR and other fields. It also invites experimental and industrial papers that validate practical approaches and provide insights for further theoretical investigations based on experimental findings.
Virtual Conference During the Pandemic
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ICTIR'20 was conducted as a fully virtual event, making it one of the first virtual conferences of its kind. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the conference successfully brought together a diverse community of researchers and practitioners. The event saw close to 100 participants in total, and the feedback received from participants was overwhelmingly positive. The virtual format not only ensured the safety and well-being of attendees but also provided an inclusive platform for global participation.
Conference Program
ICTIR'20 featured a dynamic and engaging program designed to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration. The conference included two tutorials that offered valuable insights into the latest developments in the field. Two keynote presentations delivered by renowned experts provided thought-provoking perspectives on key aspects of information retrieval. Research paper presentations showcased innovative research findings, while industry sessions facilitated interactions between academia and industry, highlighting the practical applicability of IR approaches.
The successful organization of ICTIR'20 by the IAI Research Group at UiS demonstrated their commitment to advancing the foundational aspects of IR and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. Through this conference, researchers had the opportunity to present their work, exchange ideas, and shape the future of information retrieval.
