Why go abroad for short-term activities?

Shorter stays are a great option if you:

  • Want to test if long-term exchange is right for you
  • Have already been on exchange and want to travel abroad again
  • Cannot or do not wish to stay away from home for a full semester
  • Want to go abroad earlier in your degree
  • Are missing a few credits to complete your degree
  • Are attending a one-year programme and therefore cannot go on regular exchange

Short-term activities abroad can be combined with regular semester exchange during your degree.

Remember that you can always contact the International Office or your student advisor if you have questions about studying abroad.

Study opportunities

Study stays organised through your study programme

Some study programmes offer the opportunity for a short-term study abroad during your degree. In other study programs, there may be opportunities for short-term stays during the academic year, such as through temporary academic collaborations between UiS and one or more institutions abroad.

If you’re wondering whether there are relevant opportunities for your study programme, please contact your student advisor.

Challenges through ECIU University

UiS is a member of a university alliance for collaboration within higher education: the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). This alliance focuses on challenge-based learning (CBL), where students tackle real-world problems in teams consisting of other students, academic staff, and employees from organizations and local businesses.

More information about ECIU challenges.

Micro-modules

ECIU also offers micro-modules, allowing you to enhance your expertise in a subject area of interest and shape your own learning. The topics for micro-modules you enroll in don’t have to be directly related to your study programme. Micro-modules come in various formats; some are fully digital, while others take place at host institutions abroad.

Summer schools

Many universities abroad offer shorter study programmes during the summer. Please note that students usually have to pay fees to participate in summer schools, but it may be possible to apply for a grant if the programme meets the criteria outlined in the grant section below. You must explore any relevant summer schools on your own, but feel free to contact the International Office if you have questions about grant opportunities.

Traineeship opportunities

Traineeships organised through your study programme

Short-term traineeships abroad are typically organised through the study programme. If you’re wondering whether this may be relevant for you, please reach out to your student advisor.

Can I receive a grant?

Grants for short-term study abroad are mainly funded by the Erasmus+ programme, and there are therefore some criteria deciding whether you can get financial support for a specific activity. However, you can go on short-term stays abroad, for example a challenge through ECIU University, regardless of whether you receive a grant or not.
