Academic Requirements for International Applicants

When applying to an International Master's degree at the University of Stavanger some academic requirements must be met to be eligible for admission. These can be summarized in three steps.

1. Length of the bachelor's degree

Applicants are required to have an undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree with a minimum study duration of three years to be eligible for a Master's degree at the University of Stavanger. Some applicants may be required to have more than three years of university education to be eligible for admission. Check the country-specific requirements to see if that applies to you.

2. Minimum grade average

Admission to Master's programmes at the University of Stavanger requires a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C (according to ECTS standards) in your Bachelor's degree.

A Norwegian C is equivalent to an Upper Second Class Honours degree in the British education system, or a B in the American education system. Applicants can view the complete list of country-specific minimum grade requirements in the Country List.

The following minimum grade requirements are established as a guideline for admission to master's degree programmes at the University of Stavanger:

  • Bachelor's degree from Bangladesh: 3,0 of 4,0 or higher/ 65% or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Cameroon (English-speaking part): 3,0 of 4,0 or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Cameroon (French-speaking part): 14 of 20 or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from China: 75% or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Egypt: 65% or higher
  • Bachelor’s degree from Ethiopia: 80% or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Ghana: Second class upper division or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from India: 3,0 of 4,0 or higher/ 65% or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Iran: 14 of 20 or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Nepal: 65% or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Nigeria: Second class upper division or higher
  • Bachelor's degree from Pakistan: 3,0 of 4,0 or higher
  • Bachelor’s degree from the Philippines: 75% or higher/ 2,00 or better
  • Bachelor's degree from Russian Federation: 4,0 of 5,0 or higher (Khorosho (Good) or higher)
  • Bachelor's degree from Uganda: Second class upper division or higher
  • Bachelor’s degree from the USA: 2,8 of 4,0 or higher

Please note that we will only consider an unweighted GPA in your application.

3. Academic requirements to the study programme

Admission to Master's programmes at the University of Stavanger requires a relevant Bachelor's degree. In many cases, there are minimum ECTS credit requirements in specific courses. Find the academic requirements for each study programme on the respective programme's website: Master's study programmes taught in English.

The credit system used at the University of Stavanger is based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). 60 ECTS credits are the equivalent of a full year of study or work. 30 ECTS credits are equivalent to one semester of coursework. The duration of a bachelor's degree in Norway is usually three years although some courses are longer.

  • A bachelor’s degree in Norway consists of 180 ECTS in total (3 years)
  • A master’s degree in Norway consists of 120 ECTS in total (2 years)

Defining ECTS credits in relation to one full-time academic year in Norway:

  • 10 ECTS credits are equivalent to a total workload of 17 % of one full academic year in Norway
  • 20 ECTS credits are equivalent to a total workload of 33 % of one full academic year in Norway
  • 30 ECTS credits are equivalent to a total workload of 50 % of one full academic year in Norway.
  • 30 ECTS credits are also equivalent to 100% of one academic semester in Norway.
  • 40 ECTS credits are equivalent to a total workload of 67 % of one full academic year in Norway
  • 50 ECTS credits are equivalent to a total workload of 83 % of one full academic year in Norway
  • 60 ECTS credits are equivalent to a total workload of 100 % of one full academic year in Norway
