The EMMIR programme is the first African-European Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Migration Studies. EMMIR is a unique study programme focusing on migration through an intercultural approach. It provides profound theoretical skills in migration studies combined with field work in Europe and Africa. It is designed as a multidisciplinary programme that addresses important contemporary issues in an emerging field of study. EMMIR is jointly run by three African and four European universities, facilitated by a wider network of partners.
EMMIR includes study periods in both, Europe and Africa. Students' mobility is understood as a key to mutual understanding of different views and cultures of migration and movement and will sharpen intercultural sensitivity.
Student mobility
Student mobility is one of the programme’s crucial features. The two-year programme begins in Oldenburg, Germany. In the second semester, all students move to Stavanger, Norway.
In the third semester, students attend the partner university of their choice, they complete courses and a project-based internship. Before the final semester, a joint proposal colloquium leads to the formation of supervision groups continuing in the fourth semester in order to support the research and thesis writing.

EMMIR students become acquainted with different cultures and academic traditions and gain knowledge about migration issues in internships. They will gain profound skills and specialise in of the four programme foci, this will provide them with excellent chances for employment in national and international governmental and private sector organisations or in academia. Graduates will be awarded a joint degree by the EMMIR partner universities.

How can you apply for the EMMIR programme?
EMMIR is a competitive programme and we have thorough processes to select top candidates for our scholarship and self-funded placements. The application process is coordinated by University of Oldenburg.
The programme builds upon a first degree such as a Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent qualification) in a field related to migration studies: e.g. Social Sciences, History, Cultural Studies, Educational Sciences, Law, Economics, Development Studies and Journalism.
To be an eligible candidate for the EMMIR programme, you should have:
- a first degree in a field relevant to migration studies (or be able to convincingly justify why you are switching fields),
- a final grade from your last degree minimum of C+ or equivalent,
- proficiency in English or a second language if English is your native language,
- a last degree from no more than 5 years ago (or be able to convincingly justify why you are returning to your studies), and
- knowledge of migration studies, intercultural relations, and empirical methods.
These requirements should be made clear in your application documents as well as in your Statement of Purpose.
