Knut Erik er førsteamanuensis innen numerisk fluiddynamikk (CFD). Han har en doktorgrad fra NTNU i 2010 innen flerfasestrømning, der han utviklet modeller for simulering av vanndråper i olje under påvirkning av et elektrisk felt. Etter doktorgraden jobbet han som forsker ved SINTEF Energi, hovedsakelig med utvikling av termodynamiske modeller og strømningsmodeller for CO2-transport. I 2012 begynte han i Lloyd’s Register (nå Vysus Group), der han gjorde risikoanalyser og simuleringer av gasspredning, brann og eksplosjoner for olje- og gassindustrien. Han begynte å undervise på UiS i 2014 og i 2018 ble han ansatt som førsteamanuensis. Siden 2020 er han også studieprogramleder for bachelor- og masterstudiet innen maskinteknikk.

I tillegg til å undervise innen fluiddynamikk og CFD bedriver han forskning innen følgende fagområder:

Aerodynamikk og hydrodynamikk

Forståelsen av strømning i luft og vann er sentralt innen grønn omstilling, fornybar energi og energieffektivitet.

  • I prosjektet Future Energy Hub har Knut Erik jobbet med å skape bedre bymiljøer gjennom simulering av vind i urbane strøk. Det har også blitt utviklet modeller som benytter maskinlæring og kunstig intelligens for å predikere vindfelt sammen med NTNU, SINTEF og NablaFlow.
  • Sammen med Framo Innovation, Norwegian Tidal Solutions og Validé har han bidratt til utviklingen av et nytt konsept for tidevannsturbiner.
  • Det har blitt etablert en dronelab på UiS i samarbeid med Nordic Unmanned for å utvikle mer effektive droner.
  • Innen reduksjon av luftmotstand har vi sett på strømning rundt idrettsutøvere sammen med NTNU, Olympiatoppen og NablaFlow. (https://www.tu.no/artikler/digital-tvilling-kan-gi-kajsa-storre-fart/477391)

Flerfasestrømning

Strømning med flere faser er et komplekst fysisk fenomen, som krever avanserte beregningsmodeller. Forskningen her omfatter både utvikling og testing av nye modeller, samt anvendelse av modeller innenfor nye områder som detaljert simulering av brønnsementering. Her samarbeides det med flerfaselaben på Institutt for energi- og petroleumsteknologi på UiS.

Blodstrømning

Utvikling av pasientspesifikke modeller for blodstrømning kan hjelpe kirurger å planlegge inngrep for å bedre utfall av operasjoner og gi økt livskvalitet for pasienter. Knut Erik er også aktiv innen innovasjon og kommersialisering. Han har bidratt på flere mindre innovasjonsprosjekter sammen med oppstartselskaper for å utvikle ny teknologi, og har også startet spin-off selskapet Nabla Flow sammen med Siri Kalvig og Luca Oggiano. Nabla Flow jobber med å gjøre avanserte simuleringsmodeller tilgjengelige for industrien gjennom innovative nettløsninger.
